mpezalla asked: I am very curious about the images you posted in July -- they look like drawings of the canals on Mars. I am an artist, and last fall spent time in the archives at the Lowell Observatory, looking at Earl Slipher's hundreds of drawings of Mars and its canals. His drawings were beautiful, and amazingly consistent over decades of observations. Were those drawings of Mars? Perhaps by Lowell, or someone else? They didn't look familiar to me. - Margaret

Yes, those were mostly Percival Lowell’s illustrations of Martian canals. Or what he thought were Martian canals, rather. I wrote a long piece a few months back about Lowell’s illustrations and surprising truth behind the illusion.
